SNORING & ALLERGIES
Snoring is the objectionable sound made by low-frequency vibrations of the nose palate tongue and throat while sleeping. Inability to breathe through the nose contributes to narrowing and blockage of the upper airway. The sleeper is usually not aware of the cacophony, but the significant other along side him or her is. Repeated awakening of ones partner can put a strain on the relationship.
Fortunately there are many ways to correct snoring. The first priority is to get control of ones allergies. Dust mite hypersensitivity is a frequent cause of nasal blockage as the bed is most common point of contact with these microscopic creatures. Animal allergies also make snoring worse, especially when pets share your bed. Structural problems of the nose and sinuses can also block the nasal airway. Most often a result of nasal polyps, a deviated nasal septum or chronic sinusitis.
Sedating drugs and alcohol also deepen sleep and relax the supporting structures of thee upper airway.
Obesity is also linked to snoring. A neck collar over 17 inches seems to be a significant risk factor for structural blockage of the upper airway.
If snoring is a problem and you have difficulty breathing through your nose, an evaluation for allergies is warranted. Nasal steroid spray and environment control of dust mites and animal can be effective. Confirming allergies is important to optimize treatment. Avoid eating before bed.
We can help you get a quieter, restful night's sleep
